Additionally, there can be regional variation in the distribution of waterparks in the U.S. Some waterparks are part of a larger resort and vary in whether they are indoor or outdoor. There are currently over one thousand waterparks within the U.S., most of which identify as stand-alone outdoor waterparks.
In 2020 the water park with the highest attendance during that was Universal's Volcano Bay with just over 500 thousand visitors a substantial reduction from the previous year as a result of the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
